Understanding Brain Herniation by Dr Winnie Lim Khoo, Neurologist Manila
Brain Herniation is actually a neurological condition wherein there is a significant increase in pressure which made the brain shift from it’s original position inside the skull. Signs and symptoms of brain herniation may include:
- Dilated pupil
- Severe Headache

The cause of brain herniation maybe secondary to the following: aneurysm, hemorrhage or bleeding in the brain, head injury, edema and brain tumor. Neurologist normally needs brain imaging using CT scan or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to identify displacement of brain tissue and the type of herniation. Patients are stabilised (airways & circulation).
